April 2009
U12's
Wednesday 15th April saw the replay of the Rockies V Valley
Rovers match, which had been deferred due to weather, and
although conditions weren’t ideal, the match proceeded. James
Downey was first on the scoreboard when he blasted a shot to the
net in the opening minutes. Patrick McDonagh worked really hard
throughout and was rewarded with two fabulous points. Dillion
Daniels did Trojan work in defence to keep Valley Rovers at bay.
Blackrock dictated most of the play in the game although in
fairness to Valley Rovers they never gave up and certainly upped
the tempo in the second half. The final score was Blackrock 3-8
Valley Rovers 1-5. Saturday 18th saw a double header for the
u/12s at Church Rd. First Passage played the Rockies in what
turned out to be a low scoring but hugely exciting and enjoyable
encounter. Scores were hard to come by and while both teams
wasted chances, a draw after 50 minutes was a fair result with
Ryan Cantwell grasping an equalising point in the dying minutes.
Others to play well were Patrick McDonagh, John Boylan, Dillon
Daniels and James Downey. Blackrock played Douglas in the second
game in what turned out to be a tense and exciting match. Martin
O Farrell fought hard throughout and was ably assisted by John
Cashman and Seamus Adams. Conor and Daire O Brien were resilient
in defence however Douglas, were the better team on the day, and
converted their chances to run out winners. Douglas 3-3,
Blackrock 0-5. Church Rd had its own curtain raiser to the Cork
Waterford match, when Dungarvan visited last Sunday morning to
play an U12 selection. It was a beautiful morning for hurling,
as the boys in blue and white of Dungarvan battled against the
green and gold of Blackrock. There was terrific talent on both
sides with plenty of skill and heart evident. Martin O Farrell
covered acres of ground in midfield, with Noel Holland providing
excellent assistance. Blackrock had some great scores including
goals from Philip Buckley and Michael O Halloran and Ryan
Cantwell throwing over an excellent long range point from play.
Daniel O Mahony was solid in goal throughout the encounter.
Dungarvan matched Blackrock throughout the game and Blackrock
did well to hold on to win. Darragh O Callaghan and Barry
Grainger also contributed to a great match. We hope to return to
Dungarvan later in the year for a rematch
City league Matchs.
First into the fray were the Rockies who hosted St
Vincents at home and it was end to end action. Vincents
forged ahead scoring 2 goals and the Rockies had to
battle hard to get back into the game. John Boylan,
Darragh O Callaghan and Noel Holland lead by example as
we pegged St Vincents back to a half time score 2goals
to 1-1. Against the wind in the second half Noel Holland
was outstanding sending quality ball into the square.
The Vincents defence were extremely strong under
pressure and it was very proving very difficult to get
the vital scores. Eventually the pressure paid off and
the result at full time was a draw at 2-2 each. Ciaran
Cormack and Philip Buckley defended well for the
Rockies.
A bus ride across the city then to a sunny Farranree
where Blackrock lined out against Na Piarsaigh. This
game was a physical encounter and the outstanding
defensive play of Conor O Brien was the feature of this
match. His tackling, blocking and hooking were
excellent, and time and time again he drove the team on.
Unfortunately scores were hard to come by and Na
Piarsiagh began to dominate the game. With the Na
Piarsaigh forwards converting their chances, Blackrock
had an uphill battle which proved too difficult on this
occasion. Na Piarsaigh ran out worthy winners in this
encounter. Daniel O Mahony as always was brave in goal,
and Martin O ‘Farrell fought hard in midfield. |

U/11 League Semi- Final
Blackrock Gold league campaign ended in the dreary rain in
Carrigaline last Saturday.
Carrigaline were just about deserving winners over the 50 mins but
this was a close encounter throughout with the result in question up to
the last five minutes. The conditions were very heavy and difficult for
hurling but Carrigaline were first on the scoreboard and led for most of
the game. Martin O Farrell was the driving force for Blackrock in the
middle of the field throughout this game, scoring a point from play
which was added to by Brian O Mahony, who also had a great game. Half
time score Blackrock 0-2 Carrigaline 1-2.
Blackrock fought hard in the second half and drew level with
Carrigaline at 1-3 each following a Sean Bracken goal with around 5
minutes to go. However Carrigaline responded well and scored 3 late
goals. Barry Grainger and Kevin Green shared the goalkeeping duties and
both did very well under sustained pressure. John Cashman was solid at
Center Back, with great support from John Boylan. Again the full panel
of 21 was used as was the case throughout the league campaign.
This team improved throughout the year and no doubt are looking
forward to next year already.
Blackrock Gold Barry Grainger, Dillon Daniels, Philip Buckley,
Andrew Kenneally, Seamus Adams, John Cashman, John Boylan, Martin O
Farrell, Patrick McDonagh, Grahme Curran, Michael O Halloran, Kevin
Green, Liam O Sullivan, Brian O Mahony, Eoin O Sullivan Subs used: Sean

Blackrock u/11s
Our u/11s contested the U/12B county quarter final in near perfect
weather conditions in the beautiful surrounds of Rostellan, the home
pitch of Aghada GAA. This was a game we had been eagerly looking forward
to following our great victory in the city championship.
On this occasion however, we had to give way to a physically stronger
home side. Aghada got off to a great start scoring 2 - 1 before
Blackrock replied with a great goal by Jack Buckley. Further Aghada
scores were responded to by a game Blackrock side who notched up a
further 1-1 of their own, the second goal being a typical opportunistic
Liam O Sullivan effort. Having faced a strong wind in the first half,
and trailing on a scoreline of 4 -5 to 2-2, we were well in the match at
half time.
However on the resumption Aghada threw everything at us, and surged
further ahead, but the Rockies never allowed the heads to drop despite
the loss through injury of the very impressive John Cashman. The Rockies
put in a strong final quarter, with subs Barry Grainger and Kevin Green
playing their hearts out. While second best on the day, the young
Rockies can be proud of their achievement in this comptetion which will
stand them in good stead for next years championship. On the day Daniel
O Mahony gave a magnificent display which some outstanding reflex saves.
Daire O Brien as captain led by example throughout and Martin O Farrell
& Ryan Cantwell never gave up the chase. Final Score 5-9 2-6

With Mallow contesting every ball, the second half saw plenty of action

Gold V Nemo
Neighbours
Nemo travelled to Church Rd for this encounter last thursday night.
Blackrock Gold started well when Michael O Halloran crashed home 2 goals
in the first five minutes. Brian O Mahony and Kevin Green then both
stepped up and added another goal each before Nemo could get into their
stride. Andrew Kenneally, Dillon Daniels and Seamus Adams all worked
hard throughout the match for Blackrock. Nemo rallied in the second half
with Killian Coleman battling hard and full forward Eoin O Connell
scored a lovely point. Brian O Mahony replied with a point for the
Rockies, and Nemo scored another before Ciaran O Connell then got on the
scoresheet for the Rockies. Nemo continued to fight but When Barry
Grainger was switched from goal to the forward line and snatched a goal
of his own, Blackrock ran out winners. Another good result for Blackrock
against a hard working Nemo team.

Gold 2 - 6 Mayfield 2- 1
The
sixth league game took the Rockies to Mayfield. Early scores from Brian
O Mahony, Philip Buckley and a goal from Kevin Green settled Blackrock
well. Mayfield were then awarded a penalty which they finished to the
back of the net. In the second half Mayfield upped their game and
contested every ball. Paul O Regan and Dillon Daniels were solid in
holding Mayfield at bay while Barry Grainger and Patrick McDonagh were
relentless in pursuit of scores. Blackrock were victorious again, but
credit to Mayfield who never gave up. Final Score Blackrock 2 - 6

Blackrock
3 V St Vincents Our second Championship match was northside again this
time against St Vincents. In a hugely enjoyable contest the Saints were
first on the scoreboard with three unanswered points from frees. Ciaran
Cormack then pointed Blackrocks first score. Blackrock backs were under
huge pressure throughout this game, and Daire O'Brien was outstanding in
defence. St Vincents pointed again before Blackrock pulled two back, one
a point from play from Ryan Cantwell. Half time St Vincents 0-4 -
Blackrock 0-3. From the restart Vincents free taker James Nagle punished
every Blackrock indiscipline. However Brian O Mahony batted an incoming
ball to the back of the net to put Blackrock 1 ahead. The saints
recovered scoring two points before Liam O Sullivan got on the
scoresheet with a well taken goal. Another St Vincents point and the
score was level. Both teams hooked and blocked and played with huge
intensity in this very exciting battle. Daniel O Mahonys puck outs aided
by the wind were delivering more ball to the forwards and Michael O
Hallorans' point along with a close in free from a tight angle taken
very well by Martin O Farrell edged Blackrock ahead. At the whistle
Blackrock were winners by 2 points. Final Score Blackrock 2 - 6 St
Vincents 0 -10. James Nagle for St Vincents was outstanding throughout
the game giving an unbelievable display of accuracy from frees.

B Championship Qualifier
Blackrock
3-6 Na Piarsaigh 3-4
Our
first bite of championship hurling, took place in the lofty heights of
Farranree in glorious sunshine, and with Na Piarsaigh the opposition, it
was going to be an uphill struggle. Na Piarsaigh starting well rifling
home 2 rockets in the first 8 minutes. Stunned by this, the rockies were
slow to settle and failed to get into their stride. Na Piarsaigh tagged
on another point to go 2 - 1up. A free from Ciaran Cormack resulted in
our first score midway through the half. Na Piarsaigh kept the pressure
on and it was end to end hurling, John Cashman defending furiously,
before a point attempt from Ciaran Cormack dipped and ended up in the
back of the net on the stroke of half time. Half time score Na Piarsaigh
2-1 Blackrock 1- 1. With the wind in second half, and the boys getting
accustomed to the small pitch, it was all to play for. Na Piarsiagh
however, stung the Rockies again with a early goal and 2 points to leave
us trailing by 8 points. Martin O Farrell started the comeback with a
goal, followed by a great point by Michael O Halloran. Ryan Cantwell who
fought and chased every ball in the second half was rewarded with a
point of his own. Martin O Farrell goaled again and Na Piarsaigh replied
with a point. Michael O Halloran then stepped up to score the levelling
point with 8 mins to go. 2 frees in the last five mins gave the Rockies
some breathing space and a fantastic save by Daniel O Mahony allowed us
to hang on for victory. A very exciting and well fought match between
two hugely commited teams. Final Score Blackrock 3-6 Na Piarsaigh 3-4

all the Rockies.
While
they acquitted themselves well against some of the finest
hurling teams in Ireland the emphasis was on having an enjoyable
day and everyone getting a game. The positive experience of
participating in this event will be of immense benefit to all
the hurlers.

Rockies 5 - 4 Sarsfields 3 - 8
Played at Church Rd Sat June 30th 2007
Young ten year old Rocky Noel Holland placed the sliotar on the
sideline to tee up a side line cut. Then he proceeded to expertly split
the posts from 30 metres to a huge round of applause from the amazed
spectators. A few minutes later Aaron Myers of Sarsfields drove a
powerful ball from 50 metres to the Blackrock net for a wonder goal.
This Cashman Cup match played at Church Road on Saturday 30th June
had some fine hurling with brilliant skills and stick work on display.
Those who criticise the present state of underage hurling in Cork city
should attend more games like this!
Conor O'Brien at fullback for Blackrock along with Ciaran Cormack
were outstanding. Up front Liam O'Sullivan and final goal hero Paul
O'Regan also made a major contribution. For Sars, Kevin Crowley, James
O'Leary and Kevin Cronin worked very hard throughout. Daniel O'Mahony in
the Blackrock goal made some incredible saves from the hungry Sarsfields
forwards as play went from end to end. The loud applause at the end was
well merited by the two teams.
In the second game the Blackrock team defeated the Sarsfields team
with Martin O'Farrell contributing two goals and Simon Lougheed adding a
goal and a point.

Report
from Rockies and Blackrock Teams Round 5
The
Rockies and Blackrock teams (1997 panels) played Sarsfields and Glanmire
under 10s in two Mick Cashman Cup games at Church Road on the Bank
Holiday Saturday. The home teams came out just ahead in tight
contests.
It
is a great tribute to the participating clubs that the hurling matches
and competition itself are run off so well and for that the organising
committee would like to thank Douglas, St Finbarrs, Bishopstown, Eire Og
and Sarsfields. Already over 30 games have been played and all under 10
hurlers in the six clubs have been very active with regular weekly
matches.
Report
from Rockies and Blackrock Teams Round 4 Match
The Blackrock under 10 teams paid a visit to St Finbarrs Hurling Club
on Saturday 12th May to play matches in the Mick Cashman Cup. Two great
games ensued in which almost 80 young hurlers participated.
Blackrock had a very narrow victory over the Barrs on the scoreline
of 2 - 2 to 1 - 2. There was little or nothing between the sides
throughout the game and it could have gone either way right to the end.
Simon Lougheed, Andrew Kenneally, Patrick McDonagh and Jack Twomey
hurled really well. The Barrs had fine hurlers in Shane McCarthy,
Michael Shinnick, Christopher Coleman, Sean O'Leary and Denis Morris.
Two late Rocky goals gave them the points in the second fixture on
the scoreline of 4 - 2 to 2 - 3 in another great game. The Rockies had
excellent performers in Daniel O'Mahony, Eoin O'Sullivan, Sean Adams and
John Boylan. Shane Cox, Corey Buckley, Nathan Holland and Mark Griffin
caught the eye for St Finbarrs. Our thanks once again to Diarmuid Hurley
of St Finbarrs for organising the games in such an impressive manner.
Report
from Rockies and Blackrock Teams Round 3 Match
Blackrock 4 - 3 The Rockies 5 - 0
This was an absolute cracker! When Liam O'Sullivan for the Rockies
squeezed in the final goal with time up, it brought the curtain down on
an outstanding game. Ciaran Cormack tried for a long range point with
the final shot but it tailed agonisingly wide.
Blackrock had heroic performers in Ryan Cantwell at centre field and
Philip Buckley in the backs. Cian Daly chipped in with two goals, while
Niall Casey added a goal. Martin O'Farrell with 1 - 2 had a great game
and Michael O'Halloran who scored a great long range point put in a good
mornings work.
The Rockies with Jack Buckley at centre field matched Blackrock in
every facet of hurling skills. Ciaran Cormack with three goals and
lengthy striking is a joy to watch. Josh Calder Potts and the twins
Conor and Dara O'Brien worked hard all the way through while Kevin Green
was delighted with his lovely goal.
The game finished in great excitement as both sides strove for the
Church Road bragging rights. However when Ciaran Cormack's final mighty
effort just failed referee Bobby Thornhill called a halt to the
proceedings and both teams left the field to a great ovation from the
very large crowd.
The teams travel to Togher on Saturday 12th May to play St. Finbarrs
and the Barrs at 11.30 in the fourth round of the Mick Cashman Cup. All
players are to report to Church Road at 10am.
Report
from Rockies and Blackrock Teams Round 2 Match
On
Saturday 28th, the two Church Road sides played the Douglas Greens and
Douglas Blacks in the Mick Cashman Cup with the honours shared in the
games. Highlight of the morning was an outstanding goal keeping display
by Daniel O'Mahony for the Rockies whose saves drew huge rounds of
applause from the assembled crowd. Definitely a player to watch! James
Downey, John Boylan and Paul O'Regan also played well for the Rockies.
Daniel Jack Twomey, Stephen Cotter, Simon Lougheed and Oisin Wedel were
brilliant for Blackrock.
Report
from Rockies and Blackrock Teams Round 1 Match
The St. Finbarrs under 10 teams visited Church Road on Saturday 21st
April to launch the 2007 Mick Cashman Cup games. After two cracking
games witnessed by a very appreciative crowd, the Blackrock teams edged
ahead to grab the league points.
For the Rockies, Noel Holland, Liam O'Sullivan, Barry Grainger and
Conor O'Brien were outstanding. The Barrs had skilled hurlers in Conor
Dennehy (goalie) Shane Hurley, John Buttimer, Daire O'Sullivan and Luke
Lombardi.
Blackrock players such as Adrian Daly, Michael O'Halloran, Niall
Casey and Cian Daly gave great displays. St.Finbarrs stars of the future
were Stephen Sherlock (a cousin of Wayne's) Eoghan O'Sullivan, Billy
Hennessy and Allissio Bagattin in goal.
Our thanks to Diarmuid Hurley of St. Finbarrs Hurling Club for two
fine games.
